This week, news outlets pulled the fire alarm on extreme temperature, with many reporting a heat index of 152°F in the Middle East.
Reporters say that a fusion of explosive temperature and sodden air caused this swollen metric—and created conditions beyond what humans normally tolerate.
I can’t read such coverage without thinking of the poor decisions, layered atop countless other poor decisions, that built this global kiln. The business and political leaders who could have chosen long-term stewardship over myopic Pyrrhic victories. The invasive, pervasive damage that is becoming harder for even the most privileged to ignore, and impossible for any to wish away.
I recorded Noise #98 thinking of swirling uncertainty around our ecological future, and the growing momentum of environmental hurt and public outrage against it. I also kept in mind the hope that our future decisions, both momentous and minuscule, can be made with global health as their molten core.
